The Effective Interview

Prepare

• Book an interview room and refreshments. • Ensure that you will not be interrupted during the interview. • Give yourself 10 minutes extra prior to the arrival of the candidate to re-read the CV and/or previous interview notes.

Receive

• Tune in – ask about the journey or weather (so they get used to your tone of voice and vice versa). • Introduce yourself and your colleagues – name and job title. • Settle the candidate – offer coffee.

• Explain the format and duration of the interview. • Ask the candidate if they have any time constraints.

Obtain Information

• Start with the present job – ask an open question to get the candidate talking. • Explore the current job in terms of competencies, relevance, and motivation. • Review level of competencies, taking experience from past and present jobs or life experiences. • Future aspirations – relevance to the job. • Ask the candidate what they know about the organisation – shows level of preparation (will vary according to job level).

Benefits of the Job

• Explain the context of the job and how the vacancy has arisen. • Explain the content of the job and what they will do day to day (do not oversell the job). • Answer questions that the candidate may have at this stage.

End

• Explain the next stage in the selection process (with likely timeframe). • Thank candidate for their time and show them to Reception. Assessment Of Candidates
