Selecting a Buddy

Probably the most important aspect to using buddies during induction is to make sure that they are the right fit for the role.

The buddy should have all the desired behaviours required for the position – be a good performer and be recognised in the workplace as a good employee. It is a waste of time and can seriously undermine the effectiveness of the induction programme when staff are selected that don’t show the right behaviours. The new employee may consider what they see as being what is required and act in the same way. It can affect how that new employee is viewed at first glance by other staff. ▪ Good communication skills (especially listening skills) ▪ Coaching skills ▪ Shows the desired behaviours ▪ Knows the business ▪ Knows the job and how work is conducted ▪ Has an established network of contacts in the organisation ▪ Believes in the mission and values of the business ▪ Is a team player A staff member that has potential can always be trained or developed over time so it is worthwhile to get them involved once recognised.
