Who Should Be Involved And Getting Them On Board

This is important. The success or failure of your induction programme depends upon who participates in it. In some large organisations the responsibility of induction is assigned to the training department, so a dedicated trainer conducts the programme. The benefit to the organisation is that training can be assessed and evaluated from the system usually in place within a training department and the content and outcomes should be consistent because the same people are doing the training. The disadvantage to an organisation when induction is centralised to a certain department or staff member can be that the new employee misses out on the opportunity to socialise and connect with their manager, supervisor, and colleagues from an early stage. ➢ Have a communication channel open to use when starting in their workplace. ➢ Know key individuals and their expectations in the workplace. ➢ Understand the real nature of their job/position from the front lines. ➢ See that the organisation values them because of the range of staff and the time they have taken to be involved in their induction. ➢ Be able to ask job-specific questions that they are worried or concerned about that the induction programme might not cover. By having a mix of staff involved in the induction process the new employee will:

The time involved for these other groups of staff can be ongoing or for specific activities.

For example

During the induction of a new employee the new employee’s manager comes in, presents the business objectives for the employee’s business unit, and then explains their role in achieving those objectives. This may only take a couple of hours but the benefits would be much greater compared with using a trainer who was not involved in that business unit. The involvement of other parties in the induction programme must be planned and the content that will be delivered monitored for both relevance and meeting the learning needs of the new employee.
